20 Miles
Its a mile or so uphill to the start of the Ridgeway from the B&B in Ogbourne St George. But it set the tone for the day as we had 20 miles to do. The first part of the track was battered by traffic and the terrain was generally hilly. However after a few miles things evened out and we passed through fields of horse and cows who fairly friendly.
Heading down towards the M4 we heard the disturbing sound of motorway traffic. As we drew closer it increased in volume. Walking over the bridge is an uncomfortable affair and gladly passed. A mile further on theres a pub called Shepherds Rest. It's a great place to stop just before the steep hillcimb up to the peaks. It's been nicely modernised. Its a shame they don't offer B&B too.
Leaving the pub the track is a steep climb. But theres reward to come. Further along this track theres some great views and then Waylands Smithy is an ideal place to stop for the packed lunch. Wayland's Smithy is a pre-historic burial mound. It's similar to those found at West Kenn et and is believe to have been built around the same time.
Further along the track theres the remains of Uffington Hillfort and Uffington White horse. This was another strategic point used at various times like that at Barbury. It's downhill after that, passing some friendly cows and horses. Then a few miles along the road to Letcombe Regis
