10 Miles

The start is a gentle climb up Oving hill. There are sarsen stones litering the way on either side and both Silbury Hill and Avebury itself are clearly visible for the first 4 Miles. Little Remains of the Sancturary at the start of the trail. Although it is now believed to be the remains of a pre-historic building built at the same time as work began at Avebury.

After reaching the summit the path turns for the worst. Theres a lot of damage here caused by vehicles. The tracks are big and have cut into the soft chalk allowing rainfail to cause further erosion. Its important to walk on level ground as much as possible to avoid blistering.

The first stop worth mentioning is Barbury Castle. Its a hill with the remains of ditches and earthworks. The view of the land is excellent in all directions. Various tribes and people have therefore had a defensive structure here over the centuries. We stopped for changing of socks and food here. Its a good spot, although a little windy at times.

A few meters along the trail after leaving Barbury Castle there are toilets and carpark. We used this opportunity to prepare for the final trek to Ogbourne St George. The path here is mostly downhill and easy going. Theres a bit of road walking at the bottom which is hard on the feet after 10 miles.
